Safety In Numbers


Boys are greeted in a reception similar to that for grooms at weddings, during a mass circumcision in Kampung Nahkoda, north of Kuala Lumpur. About 25 boys, aged between 7 and 11 years, were given a grand welcome to the mass circumcision surgery, which some consider a celebration of reaching manhood.

According to recent studies, circumcision can protect men from the deadly HIV virus and prevent them carrying the strain of human papilloma virus that causes cervical cancer in women.

Youths living on Ciliwung riverbanks in South and East Jakarta take part in the “Pasar Rakyat” community bazaar over the weekend. Young people from the area are increasingly joining organizations to take part in community programs, including documenting the riverbank community’s achievements, from healthcare to environmental programs.

Digging Up The Past


A worker at a sand quarry shows a stone carving believed to be of historical importance, found in a site on the slope of Mt. Sindoro, Purbosari village, NGadirejo, Temanggung, Central Java. Locals have discovered at least 14 objects believed to be relics of the Hindu Mataram Kingdom, buried hundreds of years ago by the eruption of a volcano.
