Visionary Future of Kuala Lumpur

Established in 1957 at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak Rivers, Kuala Lumpur (KL) is one of Asia’s most dynamic cities. The city began as a mining settlement in the late 1800’s with the discovery of tin. Its impressive skyline includes the world’s talles twin towers, the old Moorish styled railway station and numerous mosques, temples and churches.

Rapid infrastructural growth over time has not diminished KL’s garden city image. Beautifully landscaped parks and an abundance of greenery have been retained to provide the city’s green lungs.

The other essential component of KL is the soul of its people who give the city its distinctive and truly Asian character. English is widely spoken and locals are typically obliging when approached by tourists looking for directions. Visitors will enjoy a wonderful time in KL and are advised to respect cultural norms and sensitivities.

Culture & Traditions – Song Dance

Across Kerala, classical dances, traditional songs and colourful dramas telling fantastic tales of deities and demons are performed with passion and precision. Every dance form features its own complex, choreographed mix of subtle movements, and students often train for years to perfect every nuance and gesture. Elaborate costomes, brightly painted masks and heavy jewerelly are donned for each performance and, like the dances themselves, the style, design and colour of every outfit is dictated by tradition.

Song and dance play an integral part in most festivals, and some celebrations are even held in honour of such art forms – in Thiruvananthapuram for example, the annual Navarathri Festival praises Mother Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, whilst the Nishagandhi Dance Festival celebrates classical dance in all its myriad forms.

Backwaters – Peace Tranquillity

Kerala’s backwaters form an intricate network of canals, rivers, lakes, lagoons, estuaries and deltas spanning more than 1900 kilometres. A leisurely cruise along any one of the backwaters is a delightful journey of discovery, one that takes you past an ever-changing landscape where remote villages give way to vast stretches of peaceful countryside, which in turn give way to bustling towns and cities.

Often described as the Venice of the East, Alleppey, with its complex maze of narrow waterways, is home to a diverse variety of animal and bird life. A boat ride to Kuttanad takes you through green rice paddy fields or north to the sleepy village of Kumarakom on the Vembanad Lake where you can watch the local skiff fisherman launching their cockleshell boats and coir workers deftly weave coconut strands into long ropes on spindles stretched between palm trees; chat to the village folk; canoe in the quiet lagoons and generally enjoy the languid pace of rural life.

Age Old Youth

Youth is how you feel within yourself, at least that’s what they say! We all know that youthfulness diminishes with time and can manifest in various ways, especially on the skin. Ageing is a road that we’ll all take in our lifetime; it is a natural sequence in the life of every woman and man.

No one can stop it, but one thing that one can do is manage one’s ageing years well, while preventing premature ageing. The key word here is “premature’. Don’t try to fight age to the extent that you become obsessed by it. Just live well and observe the rules of staying well and “not looking your age’. Let’s take a look at some of the different stages of our youth and see how we can best manage it.

Health – Relaxation Rejuvenation

Ayurveda, ‘the scince of life/health’ evolved in India around 600 BC. Today, Kerala is the only Indian state where such systems are practiced with unerring dedication. Ayurvedic medicine stresses the prevention and cure of bodily ailments and the treatment of the whole individual, not just the affected part. Naturalistic methods based on the diagnosis of the individual’s three humours – vatta, pitta and kapha – are used to tone up the nervous system, eliminate toxins and restore the body to good health.

Yoga, the ancient Indian discipline that brings about a state of tranquility through body streches, breathing exercises and meditation, is also tought in health centres and resorts throughout Kerala.
