Is Your Work Wardrobe so Conservative and Boring?

Your work wardrobe is so conservative and boring. How can you perk it up?

Add elements that are new and surprising – but not short-lived and trendy, so they last several seasons. Instead of putting the expected – a white shirt – under a navy pinstriped pantsuit, try a shiny satin-finish shirt in tangerine, pale green, or golden yellow.

Break up a suit: Substitute a lilac sweater set for the businesslike blazer that came with pleated trousers – or wear the blazer with slim-cut khakis. Slip a cashmere tee under a straitlaced vest. Accessories energize youe image too. Belt sedate trousers with a red or green snakeskin or patent leather belt instead of black or brown; replace equestrian scarves with striped, dotted, or animal-print neckerchiefs and oblongs. Drop big jewelry and switch to small, sentimental pieces, or none at all.

A Makeover for Margarine?

Ever wonder why margarine is darker than butter? It’s the law. Soon after a Frenchman created this vegetable-oil spread in 1870. American dairy groups – concerned that consumers would mistake it for butter – lobbied to legislate its color. Subsequently, some state laws prohibited the sale of yellow margarine; others required that it be pink.

Through World War II, many manufacturers sold the white spread with capsules of yellow dye, so homemakers could tint their own. One by one, state regulations softened, and in 1967, Wisconsin, the last holdout, repealed its ban on yellow margarine.

Today, all margarine is tinted yellow with the natural pigment beta-carotene – but the Food and Drug Administration still sets color boundaries. Now, margarine makers want all restrictions repealed so they can make their spreads any yellow, even pale butter-yellow.

Honey of an Idea

Processed ham and turkey with a hint of honey are crowding the shelves in delis and supermarkets nationwide, with more than 85 varieties to choose from. But the honey adds more than country flavor-research suggests it may also help prevent off-flavors, retain moisture, and keep bacterial levels down. This makes honey a perfect partner for low-fat meats, which typically have a shorter shelf life (and less natural flavor) than full-fat varieties. More sweet news: Honeyed meats have about the same calories as their plain counterparts.
