City Distinations – Langkawi

Situated at the northern end of Peninsular Malaysia are the 99 islands which comprise the Langkawi group. With a population of about 35,000 people, this group of islands is a pleasant place to visit. Although Langkawi has experienced massive developments over the last few years, the islands, mercifully, are far from ruined.

The main island is called Pulau Langkawi and Kuah is its primary town. This small village is crowded with shops that sell duty-free items.

There are a number of interesting places to see, one of them being down a mountainside. Other attractions include Makam Mahsuri, the tomb on Langkawi’s famous woman who was put the death for adultery, Makam Purba, an ancient Achehnese grave, Rhimba Rekreasi, a forest area at the foot of Gunung Raya, the island’s highest peak and a traditional Kedah House and Garden where villagers demonstrate arts and crafts.

On the second largest island, Dayang Bunting, there is a lake called the Lake of the Pregnant Maiden which ia a place of pilgrimage for barren women who drink its water in the hope of conceiving.
