Located 305 metres above sea-level. Chiang Mai is Thailand’s second largest city and offers a sharp contrast with the rest of the country. Labelled the “Rose of the North”, this city in 30 times smaller than Bangkok. It served as the capital of Lanna (Million Rice Fields) Kingdom for 700 years.
Originally founded in 1296, this city fell to the Burmese in 1556 but was re-captured in 1775. The old city of Chiang Mai is a square bounded by moats. This city will be hosting the 1995 South East Asia Games and it celebrates its 700th anniversary in 1996.
Chiang Mai is a city with a beautiful cultural personality of its own.
