Kunming is the capital of Yunan Province. It is well known for its lakes. Lake Dianchi is breath-taking – a blue-glazed dish edged with a painted trim of green. Most tourists use Kunming as a stepping stone for journeys to other towns. But Kunming has its own places of interest.
Not to be missed is the Yunnan Provincial Museum, the Buddhist Yuantong Temple, the Stone Forest and the East and West Temple Pagodas. There are also mosques in Kunming, as Yunnan’s large Muslim community dates back to the Yuan Dynasty. The largest mosque is on Shuncheng Ju, an Islamic neighbourhood, worth exploring for its small shops and halal restaurants.
