It is the largest city in Sumatra and is the gateway to the north. Much of its Dutch architectural anachronisms have been retained, especially in the commercial area along Jalan Jendral A. Yani and around Merdeka Square. The two most imposing structures in Medan are the Istana Maimun (Sultan’s Palace) and Masjid Raya (Grand Mosque).
