City Destinations – Phnom Penh

The capital of Cambodia since the 15th century, Phnom Penh is situated at the confluence of the Mekong, the Bassac and Tonle Sap rivers.

Much of present day Cambodia was part of the kingdom of Funan which prospered due to its position on the trade route between India and China. It is not surprising that Indian culture influenced the lifestyles of the rulers during the Angkor period (9th to 14th Century). Angkor Wat, much of which is in ruins today, is a masterpiece of architecture and sculpture.

It is 311 km by road from Phnom Penh. Considered one of the loveliest French cities of Indochina, Phnom Penh’s charm is still evident despite its turbulent history over the past 25 years.
