Xiamen is one of the success stories of China’s current economic reform programmes. Off-limits to tourists until the early 1980s, Xiamen is China’s third Special Economic Zone.
Places of interest include the Buddhist Nanputuo Monastery in the city centre. This monastery is built against the Wulao Mountains. A short distance away is the Overseas Chinese Museum, built by Tan Kah Kee. In the north-west is the Wuji Mountains, famous for its landscaping and the exhibition of 3,000-year-old boat-shaped coffins which are found on ledges high up on the mountain cliffs.
