The capital of Riau, Pekanbaru is a convenient gateway to mainland Riau. The city, which is relatively new, is divided into two halves by the Siak river. The 200-year-old Royal Palace of Sultan Siak is 100 km east of Pekanbaru. The annual “Paru Jalur” boat race, held on August 17, takes place at Teluk Kuantan, 200 km from Pekanbaru.
