City Destinations – Yangon

The capital and gateway city to Myanmar. Yangon is known for its glittering pagodas and picturesque lake.

Dominating the city from its hilltop site is the most sacred Buddhist temple in the country – the Shwedagon Pagoda. About 100 metres high, and built on a site that is 2,500 years old, it is clearly visible from any part of the city. The best time to visit it is during the early hours of the morning or evening when the gold spire gleams in the sun and the temperature is cooler. You can also go across the Royal Lake at night to catch a glimpse of this pagoda.

The Sule Pagoda is also over 2,000 years old and right in the centre of the town. It makes a fine sight at night when the inside of the complex is lit up by neon lights. The National Museum, which is on Pansodan Street, is known for its massive 80m high gilded Lion Throne, used by King Thibaw, the last monarch.

Yangon also has a fine open-air market and the extensive Boyoke Market is always worth a visit.
